This dining room began as a downstairs bedroom in my daughter’s first house.  The woman who lived here before used it to get herself more easily to the bathroom and kitchen downstairs (she lived here until the age of almost 100).  When my daughter and son-in-law bought the house, this is what it looked like:

This is the other side of the room.  The room is longer than it is wide.  To the left of the window here is a second entrance to the kitchen.

Needless to say, this room was in great need of help.  After emptying it out (the people who sold it left all her belongings here- note the walker still sitting under the window), it was used for a while as a storage room, later as a laundry room and finally as a dining room.

Repairs to the window wall

Drain pipes are repaired and then cased in with sheetrock.

The new window was inserted, improving insulation and lighting.

These final pictures were taken by my daughter after she put the finishing touches on the room.  We were able to get a lot of features into this room.  Enjoy!

Here is the window wall finished.  Note the crown molding, chair rail, wainscoting, and colonial baseboard.

This is a view of the dining room from the kitchen.  Note that the wall has been knocked down so that the kitchen now opens directly into the dining room (with a ledge over the oven).

This is a view looking over the oven into the dining room.  Those large doors on the left enclose a large laundry closet that houses a full washer and dryer, broom closet, and built-in shelves.

From small bedroom to custom formal dining room with a laundry closet – quite the transformation.  I hope you enjoyed these pictures.  This was part of my Christmas present to my daughter and son-in-law this year (pictures of their new and improved kitchen to follow).  It was a lot of work to transform this room but I find it safe to say Finis coronat opus
